Who Is Black America?

Tiya Miles teaches at the University of Michigan, where she is the Mary Henrietta Graham Distinguished University Professor in the Departments of Afro-American & African Studies, American Culture, History, Native American Studies,and Women's Studies. She is the author of two prize-winning works of history, Ties That Bind: The Story of an Afro-Cherokee Family in Slavery and Freedom (2005) and The House on Diamond Hill: A Cherokee Plantation Story (2010), as well as a novel, The Cherokee Rose (2015), based on her historical research. She has published various articles on women’s history and Black and Native interrelated experience and co-edited, with literary scholar Sharon P. Holland, the interdisciplinary collection Crossing Waters, Crossing Worlds: The African Diaspora in Indian Country (2006). Her latest book, which combines historical and cultural analysis with elements of the travel narrative, is titled Tales from the Haunted South: Dark Tourism and Memories of Slavery from the Civil War Era (fall 2015). She is currently working on a history of the enslavement of African Americans and Native Americans in early Detroit.
