African American History as American History

Nell Painter, author of The History of White PeopleCreating Black Americans: African American History and Its Meaning 1619 to the Present, and Sojourner Truth, A Life, A Symbol and several other books, lives and works in Newark, New Jersey. After a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University and a distinguished scholarly career, she earned a BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, both in painting.

*Since the NEH was founded, the agency has awarded more than $171 million to nearly three thousand projects on African American history and culture. Painter has been a recipient of NEH funding.
