Session 1

Who Is Black America?

Elsa Barkley Brown teaches in the Departments of History and Women’s Studies at the University of Maryland College Park. Her scholarly interests are in African American political culture with a focus on gender.  Central to this is a concern for the work of narrative in the construction of collectivities.  Her essay, “Stephanie E. Pogue and the Artist’s Veil,” published in the retrospective catalogue Arabesque: The Art of Stephanie E. Pogue, explores the art of black women’s self-portraits.  A discussion of her work in African American political culture, “Race, Sexuality, and African American Women Representing the Nation: an Interview with Elsa Barkley Brown,” is found in The Americanist: Warsaw Journal for the Study of the United States.
